On June 29 2011, Cape Town’s industrial designers met for the first time in an official capacity to celebrate World Industrial Design Day 2011. On the agenda was an introduction to The Fringe – Cape Town’s Design and Innovation District – taking shape in the east part of the city centre (given by Zayd Minty, coordinator of Creative Cape Town) and a discussion around what industrial designers need from this design and innovation district (facilitated by Byron Qually , one of the city’s foremost industrial design researchers and a partner at … XYZ Design).
What do Cape Town’s industrial designers need from The Fringe?
A mixture of hard and soft infrastructure:
- Mentorship opportunities
- Shared prototyping resources
- An industrial design forum
- Place and opportunity to collaborate with specialists across the board, not just industrial designers
- A soundproof working space
- A food court-style platform to co-consume and co-create.
- A space to showcase industrial design work to the public (a kind of shop front)
To end the day, design educator Mugendi M’Rithaa spoke about Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 bid, how the city and industrial designers in the city stand to benefit, and how individuals and organisations can get involved. He emphasised design’s role in transforming the way we live and how the city’s bid gives new impetus to designers – to take their place among the change agents in the country and the continent.
