We developed the … XYZ Design Innovation Starter Pack (INSP) to provide key information upfront, importantly, at a minimal cost.

Our INSP covers six areas depicted on the product ‘roadmap’ image below. They are: business strategy, intellectual property, industrial design, manufacturing, marketing and venture capital. This process usually takes at least six months to complete, but our INSP method compacts key milestones into only one month. This allows inventors to strategise and evaluate an idea without having to commit to high costs and lengthy time-scales.

HOW TO GO ABOUT IT

First off, make an appointment to meet our key development staff at our studio in Green Point for an initial, free meeting and an open and frank discussion that will be kept strictly confidential. At this meeting we will discuss the feasibility of your idea and introduce you to our INSP in more detail. CLEAR DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

If you decide to go ahead with the INSP, the next step is to develop a short business plan and development strategy to document the essential information required by prospective funders/investors. … XYZ Design will provide time-scales and quotes for development, manufacturing and unit costs. Our strategic partners will in turn provide information on intellectual property, marketing and price points.

PROTECT YOUR IDEA

Our legal firm will introduce various methods of protecting your idea at a discounted rate. Protecting your idea before commencing with design work is an important milestone to ensure your idea cannot be copied and that similar products have not already been patented.

CONCEPTUALISE YOUR IDEA

Your idea needs to be ‘translated’ into an industrial design format that the market and industry partners, such as investors, can fully understand. Importantly, we will develop your design alongside the development strategy to ensure manufacturing processes/costs and marketing requirements are considered. As an output, we will provide a photo-realistic rendering and a technical drawing illustrating primary technologies and components.

MANAGE MANUFACTURING RISK UP-FRONT

An important consideration when creating your development strategy, is a clear understanding of manufacturing constraints. A product that is well conceived and designed can fail miserably if manufacturing constraints and quality standards are not met. We will connect you to our audited and reliable contractors, both in South Africa and abroad, who will provide information on manufacturing capabilities, quality standards and project costings.

SALES FORECAST

New Product Development (NPD) can consume vast amounts of capital and time, and in order to manage their risk, investors will question the market acceptance of your product. To help understand successful uptake, we will provide focus-group and feasibility study feedback, and our partnering firms can provide a marketing strategy at a reduced cost. Depending on the country of product deployment, we will provide you with advice on what certifications may be required, and where to obtain them.

OBTAINING FUNDING

Once your business plan has been created with accurate information, and your idea protected, you need to obtain funding to develop your product. Many inventors who approach … XYZ Design remain unaware of existing financial support available for product development. We will highlight financial models and put you in touch with private funders/investors, and representatives of corporate institutions and government support/initiatives who are much more likely to take your idea seriously once they know it has been properly vetted and formulated by … XYZ Design, and that the funding sought will realistically cover anticipated costs.

• Additional consultation outside of the INSP is chargeable at our hourly rate or on a scoped project basis.
• Depending on the design complexity, the cost of the INSP is limited to:
